Weird War Tales #41 (1975) The Dead Draftees of Regiment Six!

Why am I on a quest to complete this story? I saw pages from this story in Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez's portfolio at a con and -- having just finished Bruce Catton's excellent Civil War history book, "Never Call Retreat" -- immediately recognized them as being based on the New York City conscription riots of 1863. The riots started on July 13, 1863, shortly after the costly victory at Gettysburg. The spark was the conscription act passed earlier in the year that exempted men who paid $300 or hired a substitute. The historical basis of the story and Jose's excellent art and storytelling in just his second published work for DC hooked me. Jose told me that he liked doing historical stories. The pages also are a good fit in my collection, much of which is war comic art, albeit mostly about World War II. Note: The letters page of this issue introduces "artist Garcia Lopez, a recent immigrant to our shores, who you'll be seeing a lot more of--both as a powerful penciller and as an incredible inker!"
