There are lots of ‘recreations’ of classic comics pages out there—where artists carefully follow the ink lines of a published page to make their own inked copy—and some of these are very pretty. I’ve been known to do a few of them myself. But whilst the process of inking a page that has already been inked has its own merits, it bears no relation to the challenge of inking a page of pure pencil art. SO… sometimes I prefer to tackle things the hard way, by working only from the pencils or rough preliminary sketches I find, out in the wilds of cyberspace. Each of these ‘Re-Ink-Arnations’ is an act of translation—from pencil to ink--and like any translation, some things are lost, some things are adapted, and some things are messed up! But what I hope to show here is the importance of inking within the whole comic-creating process, and how much ink artists can affect the final comic artwork—which is often the only version readers get to see. (If you have some pencil art you’d like to see inked, feel free to message me. I never ink on the actual original artwork for any of these--a hi-res scan is all I need I to work from-- so there’s no risk of having your prize pencils ruined!)
