I've started a book of self-portraits with DD. I already had a couple of DD/self portaits in my collection (Dick Ayers and Marie Severin) and when I commissioned Gene for a third, I had the idea for the book. I'm hoping to get as many former DD artists as possible to add a page of their own. Anything the artist wants, quick sketch, fully detailed, whatever. If they care to add a note on the page regarding their DD experience, all the better, but certainly not necessary. So long as the image is of DD and a self-portrait of the artist. Looking through other peoples sketch books it's neat to see that often the further into the book you get, the better the sketches are, as the artists seem to want to try and outdo eachother! No one wants to have the lamest sketch in the book! LOL! With Gene's piece on the first page, the bar has been set VERY high! I purchased a custom made leather sketch book for the project (according to Adrienne, Gene fell in love with it when he saw it!) My goal is to try to capture not only a great book of sketches, but history in it's pages. When I was researching the artists who've contributed to the Daredevil title over the years, I was saddened to see that so many legends have passed on already. A book collecting the artists of Daredevil seems incomplete without the likes of Bill Everett, Joe Orlando, Wally Wood and others, but I'll try to get as many people as possible. I'm a fairly regular contributor to The Hero Initiative (formerly A.C.T.O.R.) Whenever I sell a piece of artwork in Ebay, I'll send a portion of the proceeds to them, and I'll often make a donation when they're having a specific fundraiser. Considering the scope of this project and how truly special it can be, I thought it would be a great idea as a fund raiser for them. So, I've been offering artists either a direct payment to themselves, or a donation to The Hero Initiative on their behalf, for their contribution to the book. Ultimately when the book is full, I'll also look into getting the book published, again with all the proceeds going to The Hero Initiative. I'm in no way trying to make any money in this endeavor. (Heck the book full of sketches is certainly enough!) So if anyone has contact info of some DD artists, go ahead and send them on to me!
