Description

Doomsday Clock Issue 7 Page 10 Writer Geoff Johns Artist: Gary Frank Colorist: Brad Anderson From my review of issue one: "First things first, let’s skip the should this exist debate... We know the details of the Moore/Gibbons deal and how DC Comics treated them. Comics Bulletin did a thorough and well thought out analysis as to why this comic should not exist in their article “The Case Against Doomsday Clock.” But it does exist. The “Doomsday Clock” has been ticking since the Before Watchmen threshold was crossed (I still stand by Darwyn Cooke’s Minutemen and Silk Spectre series which were fantastic) Unfortunately, we live in the corporate IP driven world that we do and this was going to exist. The ethical quandaries are real and do need to be acknowledged and will be acknowledged directly by the reader’s wallets and their decision whether to read this series or not. Now let’s talk about the issue itself. First things first you can tell Geoff Johns take this seriously, this is not a cash grab...for him. Johns push himself and his writing with this issue and that is refreshing. The issues I agree with Tom King who tweeted out, “…it's not a sequel; it's a response: an insane, thrilling, nerdy, cool, smart, and bloody conversation between top creators about the potential of the medium and of Superheroes. He is right, but I will take it one step further as it is also a response to the Rebirth Special, which could almost be a chapter zero to the story. We are still way too early in the story to declare anything about Doomsday Clock as a whole but this issue most certainly captures the flavor and world of Watchmen, without it being parody. Which in of itself is an accomplishment, to be honest. This is not the exact world Moore and Gibbons built and it shouldn’t be, six years have passed since Ozymandias enacted his plan for world peace at the end of the original maxi-series. Rightfully so Doomsday Clock takes its time to ease us back into the world of Watchmen, this feels like a story not an event and I am grateful for that. I honestly believed a sequel to Watchmen was never necessary…until now. Gary Frank...my god here is an artist that has leveled up and he was already top shelf. His penciling is gorgeous and couldn’t be tighter. His execution of Gibbon’s layout structure works brilliantly. Brad Anderson’s colors work very well. It’s not John Higgins exact palette but it shouldn’t be, it feels like an appropriate evolution. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this comic it genuinely gave me chills as I read it immediately after getting back from the 11:57PMrelease I did not even take the time to sit down. Heck, the fact that it got me out of the house and to the comic shop for its midnight release should speak volumes. I know I am prone to hyperbole but I think there is something very interesting happening here and it’s the start of a story worth telling. Issue two cannot come soon enough I am so excited to learn more. Excited to Learn More…That could be my thesis when talking Doomsday Clock." That was written in November of 2017. Since that time Doomsday Clock has only released nine of its announced twelve chapters Why the delays nothing has been confirmed, regardless, it has not dampened my enthusiasm for the book and my "excitement to learn more." Gary Frank is putting his heart and soul in to every panel. The craftsmanship of his pencils and inks is superb. I have wanted to own a piece of his work for years and after following the eBay auctions his rep has put up I finally found the right page. There is so much to love about this page it features so much Ozymandias, Bubastis II, Archie the Owl Ship, Saturn Girl, Johnny Thunder, and ALAN SCOTT'S Green Lantern!!! It has representation of Watchmen, DC past (JSA) and Future (Legion of Superheroes) and I think just encapsulates Doomsday Clock as a whole. I love the expression work Gary Frank does with Ozymandias. It's simply a marvelous page that I am so proud to have in my collection.
