I saw this very cool page pop up on eBay, by artist/writer Kim Dwinnell from her YA comic series, Surfside Girls. There are two heroines depicted here, Sam and Jade Lee. The two friends get involved in some supernatural sleuthing involving pirate treasure and environmental change. The first book in the series was made into a TV show on Apple+. The art is the actual published page. Kim roughs out the images digitally, then completes it with watercolors. She penciled in the words herself, after the fact. The original wording in the balloons was added digitally. Here is the description of her process that she provided to me, in her own words: "I sketch my pages, scan the sketches, print that sketch onto watercolor paper using archival, waterproof inks, and then tape that down and paint onto it with Winsor Newton Professional series watercolor. They are my originals; they are what I send to IDW. I put my text in digitally after I scan the watercolors back into Photoshop, so the speech balloons are empty, However, I wrote with pencil into the balloons before I sent them out for sale . . . ." This particular page is very much oversized, and a really cool change of pace from the rest of my collection.
