DescriptionThe rains had come with the tides on the first moon rise, washing most of Saishū Island into the sea. The surviving villagers had taken refuge up into the hills below Halla Mountain, now guests of the monks who had called the slopes their home. Many more were missing in the deluge, displaced or drowned. Locals blamed the flood on the Kuma Wani, an ancient sea creature from mythic lore. They said the deity was recently angered by Protectorate men fighting in SerPico. The surviving islanders wailed his name, begging no more souls to be dragged into the deep. A young man named BasKu was one of the lucky. He was picked up by the torrent and swept down the road from his village. The bundle of sticks he had gathered saved him as he was carried across the island, and by fortune deposited unharmed deep into GotjaWal Forest. He woke under the iron wood trees, still clutching his master’s staff and hat, however losing both trousers and kecks early in his journey. |
