Description

From the terrific "Mud Pack" arc by Alan Grant, which reunited all the beings who had used the name "Clayface", here Clayface IV discovers that morphing into the Jason Todd Robin to try and take Batman by surprise wasn't her best idea ever, since she wasn't to know he'd been dead for some months (Oh if she knew then what we know now). Norm Breyfogle gives this scene incredible energy, you can FEEL the impact that Batman feels (Even pixie boots pack a wallop) and the motion of "Robin's" spin kicks seems almost animated. Great, concise dialogue too, as Batman overcomes his initial shock and horror to realise the truth in four panels and take appropriate action by the fifth. That's Batman for you, and yet, though it's hard to see when the image is this size, there's a look of anguish and sadness in Batman's eyes in the last panel, as he realises he referred to Robin in the wrong tense, and corrects himself. Breyfogle was a master at making the simplest eye shapes create meaningful expressions via a sort of facial shorthand.
