Panel 5 (She Hulk): Terry Austin shows why he is one of the premier inkers in the business. The contrast in line weights (on She-Hulk's arm and hand) provides depth and movement.

In general. The Jack Kirby Collector published an in depth analysis of this subject with photos of pages (before and after). VC had a tendency to erase parts of Kirby's background pencil art as a shortcut to save time and ink more pages.

The first issue of the Jack Kirby collector came out in Sept of 1994. Also, Look into Tom Kraft http://kirbymuseum.org/tom-kraft/ He use to (not sure if he still does) have recreations done like this. My guess is these pages maybe samples someone prepared for editors to review for potential inking work.

If you look at Kirby's Thor pencils, he was never better. Unfortunately, Colletta was the wrong inker. He took a lot of shortcuts including erasing backgrounds. A great page none the less. Congrats.

Layton's inking style quite different here verses the other pages. This page is inked mostly with a brush where he usually uses the Hunt 107 pen.

The Jack Kirby Collector publishes Kirby's pencils (most saved by Kirby) every issue. This page along with other pages from this issue were published in pencil form as part of an article called A Failure To Communicate Part 3. (If my memory is correct)

The reason Terry Austin is not inking the book as of around this issue is becuase he was kicked out of DC for asking for a raise (of which he deserved) and they gave a raise to Marshall Rogers who didn't ask for one.

I believe this piece was finished this way on purpose. After full pencils, Alex usually starts painting the art using black so that what is left is a black and white piece. He then adds color as needed using brush and air-brush. A wonderful piece. Congrats.
