Classic 1970's comic page from Luke Cage, Hero for Hire,. This is a terrific page, penciled by the talented Geore Tuska. But what makes it really significant is that it was inked by Billy Graham, the first Black artist on Marvel's staff! Billy Graham was hired in part to help give Luke Cage, a black superhero, some authenticity. Graham grew up in Harlem and worked on Luke Cage starting with issue one. After working on Luke Cage for several years, Graham went on to help develop the Black Panther as a character. He really broke through the color barrier at Marvel at a critical time for the company. So that page you've got there represents an important moment in the history of Marvel comics. I was unaware of this information! I liked it because of the supervillain aspect of Chemistro but now I have an extra sense of appreciation. Thank you! |
