DC's Secret Wars Owner: Chris Dietzel Comment posted on 10/2/2024

It's at the top of many Zeck collectors' lists for his career best and/or most memorable. Joao and Ralf bring that same excitment to with the 80's DC that most likely would have been a Jose Luis Garcia Lopez work if done back then. ![]() The two covers I always think about the most in regards to the original are what DC would have done (which Joao has done better here than I ever could have imagined) and what if Zeck did a version B of the cover with the exact same composition but with the serie's villains instead of heroes. |

Oh man- this looks amazing with the trade dress. Incredible!! ![]() I love Mike Zeck. He's on my personal Mt. Rushmore of comic artists. But I have to say Joao's version is superior in every way. Joao's version looks like something we should all be buying from comic stores right now. |

I have a strange respect for artists depicting large or detailed shots through a chainlink fence. I imagine it's frustrating for them to compose the background of the piece and then have to put in all the links, both obscuring their background and spending all thst tedious time illustrsting every link.
This really is a striking page. I would honestly have assumed it was a cover, if you hadn't noted otherwise. ![]() Thanks! Yeah, you really have to admire Risso's choice on this page. The perspective he chose is the most time consuming option he could have selected for the scene. |

It's also split between Captain America and Captain Britain. Lots of conflicts throughout and leaves it open for more to come. Mayer's inks are precise and pulls the look of the pages together. They have a cohesive flow so even the first to the last panel would become part of a whole. ![]() My one tiny complaint with it is the five panels on the left side and only four on the right. Seems like they should have found a way to create perfect symmetry between the two sides. |

Robbi is also the creator of Spider-Gwen. I like that the homage is done from the different camera angle. It takes more concentration to plan it out than just a straight homage. ![]() Oh cool, I had no idea he actually created the character. Awesome. |

Looks great as a set! Hard to complete because a lot of these types of color guides were in an auction as a single lot recently. ![]() Yeah, I've seen a bunch of the color guides recently but they always seem to be for C or D-level characters like this. Can never seem to find the color guides for the A and B-level characters that have had the pencils and inks come up for sale. |

Steel #1, pg 10 Owner: Chris Dietzel Comment posted on 11/17/2023
Marcus Wai said:
Great one shot where you do wonder if Steel was going to be sacrificed to make the return of Doomsday have a bigger impact. A major splash with Steel taking damage with the composition of his body curling up around three sides of the splash. ![]() The main thing I like about this page is that very composition. If it were up to me Doomsday would be the focus, but that's not as important as the great layout Benes achieved. |

This is an awesome splash. I think there's an Elektra Assassin splash that does this with a big sign as well. It's a landscape and a snapshot of rural America with the sparseness and isolation under this dreary rain. Quite beautiful in how Shaw accomplishes this with the inks different effects. ![]() Thanks! Definitely one of those examples in my opinion where it doesn't matter if it has main characters featured anywhere, it's just the mood and the composition that make the page work so well. |

Excellent vintage piece! Portacio art from this Image era always seemed too short and we were just getting used to see the way he'd draw Wetworks and others in the new playground. ![]() It definitely feels like out of the original Image guys that Whilce's stuff comes up for sale far less frequently than any of the others. |
