Savage Sword of Conan #70 Prelim colour cover Earl Norem Owner: Steel Shredder Comment posted on 1/24/2024
Marcus Wai said:
Ususally the one with the dark background and sword action has more eye appeal. However, they went with this design that gives this giant monster's size more threatening realism instead of the montage look that could just be playing with scale. ![]() Yes the monster is bigger, she is similar in both, but Conan swinging his sword in the other is cool. But it's lovely to have both Norem's prelim ideas together. |

The Lady of Shalott - Frederick Hase Hayden (1874-1931) Owner: Steel Shredder Comment posted on 1/18/2024
Marcus Wai said:
Stunning work of a lady trapped in her tower looking longingly towards Camelot. The stained glass interpetation is very unique in how the poem has been adapted by many artists and storytellers even before he was born. ![]() Yes there have been many artworks on this Tennyson poem, especially in the Pre Raphaelite scene. My first ever visit to the Tate in London secured my love of art. The artworks that really impressed me that day, and still to today, were Lady of Shalott by John William Waterhouse, and the three huge paintings by John Martin of the Judgement Series. Glad you liked |

Marcus Wai said:
You can't even see the edge of the city from our vantage point. Very nice to use this tone of paper and pen to have a vintage look of the early 20th century illustrations. It's done in a way before cameras were used to document exotic locales for books and newspapers. ![]() Yes it has a look of a Fortunino Matania sketch, or of course Roy Krenkel, who was influenced by Matania. |

Sorry, I'd be the wrong guy to ask as I didn't get far into the series. Albert Moy was really into the show and you can always bring it up to him if you catch him at a con. I remember 2015 SDCC they had structure across from the booth that had a guy dressed and in full makeup as the Seer and they did the same lighting they had on the show to make you feel immersed in it and they even gave out Das Horn promos to some. ![]() That sounds a lot of fun! Rare resource for storyboards as they usually do props. You won't see them offering these for many shows or movies, but when they do it's because it plays a significant role in the production. ![]() Yeah there were many props offered for sale in the auction. The artwork is easy to keep, either in a portfolio or on the wall, and I do collect art after all. The series was my favourite tv series ever, strong characters, lots of action and great stories (historically things altered a bit), watched it all and I loved every season. Did you like it Marcus? |

Conan - Allan T. Adams, 1979 Copy of John Buscema’s Conan Owner: Steel Shredder Comment posted on 9/14/2023
Marcus Wai said:
Really fun how the shadows around and under his eyes create the domino mask for Conan. Those who aren't familiar with Conan might think it was part of a costume. One of the more memorable and resonant Buscema images and Adams does a nice job capturing this tranquil scene of deep thought. ![]() Yes it does, untill you look close up. Adams also puts some decor on the shield. Adams went on to produce awesome illustrations of buildingsfor his work in later years. Would be interesting to see a fantasy work down in a townscape now. I have noticed him on instagram and may reach out to him. Thanks |

Marcus Wai said:
The symmetrical design also and takes into consideration the complimentary bible stories being presented and the amount of light it lets into the church. Very exact in the results. ![]() Glad you like. A lot different to the normal comic stuff on CAF. William Morris of arts & craft fame started Morris & Co, and they were the place to go for the highest class stained glass work, and of course all arts & craft designed work, and they had the best artists in the UK at the time, Edward Burne Jones being the head designer. Many of their windows still survive, and I hope to view this one on a trip to Scotland one day. |

Marcus Wai said:
From how clear and precise it is, this really does look like a drawing based on an existing sculpture and not the other way around as a design to one. ![]() It could be, but my hunch is it's the study to work from. But we'll never know. I've found some of his sculptures online, but not this one. I trained as a sculptor for a year, and taking away on stone and marble is so much tougher than building up with clay. |

Innocent and chaste look with her modest clothing and praying hands thanking God for being healed or resurrected by her faith and Jesus. The pencil form really caputres the purity of the scene. ![]() Marcus, not only do you know about comic art but also about theology. Yes Jesus does bring the girl back to life. Marcus Wai said:
Wonderful old world craftsmanship from the master illustrator to condense a full story into the piece. It looks like it could be stitched tapestry with so much line detail. ![]() Yes Walter had a wonderful style, and along with this story by the famous arts and crafts movement William Morris, it makes a beautiful book. There were only a few hundred copies published of the first edition with Crane's illustrations, and so it's an expensive book to purchase. They did a facsimilie version which we have. Anyway hope you like the different stuff we bring to this site! Thanks Marcus. |

Marcus Wai said:
A real look at what really went on at their high society parties and not the idealized prim and proper affairs they always push as the ideal. As a historical document, this tells us the truth that they partied hard! ![]() Oh yeah a lot of fun was had in the Georgian times. It got a bit more prudish in Victorian times, but of course still happened. The 'fun times' didn't happen with the ladies, unless they were involved in threesomes. The courtesans were brought in. There is a very large collection of Rowlandson erotic work in the Victoria & Albert museum. It's not on show, but you can view it either online, or in front of you if you request a pre booked visit. My wife was down there to view some Walter Crane illustrations the other week, not erotic items haha |

John Williams Demon Dead Files evolution Owner: Steel Shredder Comment posted on 3/24/2023
Marcus Wai said:
The illustration presentation of this demon makes a big impression. It's a demon that's been defeated and trapped. You can tell it was once a fearsome and magnificent beast that had to be put down hard. Just enough of a background to tell you that this is in a dungeon. ![]() Nice commentary Marcus. The sketchbooks are full of a variety of sketches and panels and at the moment it is hard to put together the overall story. Thanks |

John Williams Dead Files evolution Werewolf Owner: Steel Shredder Comment posted on 3/22/2023
Marcus Wai said:
The illustration brings a full scene both near and far in order to fix our focus to the predator emerging into the clearing. Such a great direct point of view look for us to make eye contact to heighten the suspense of the moment. ![]() Thanks. This is the first sketch in the first sketchbook but these images are not in any real order. Occasionally they are panels and page numbered. This is the wolf before turning into the werewolf, but there are plenty of standing werewolves and she-wolves. I'll get other pics up on CAF of the other monsters, many unnamed, but names such as Demon, Bog Wraiths, Crawling Feas, Vampire, Eater of Souls, Walking Dead, Nightgaunt, Grand, Creeping Thane, Witch Queen, Mortuary Ghoul, Gorger, are mentioned. |

Thanks for bringing 'old school' class to CAF! Love it! ![]() Thanks. Along with loving fantasy art from the last 100 years, I also love the story telling art from many centuries ago. You can find great illustrated pieces by: Albrecht Dürer 1471 – 1528; Polidoro Caldara, usually known as Polidoro da Caravaggio c.1499 – 1543; Salvator Rosa 1615 –1673; François Boitard 1667 - 1719; Bernard Picart 1673 – 1733. Then to the wonderful 'Romantic' period, and the fantasy/horror art from the likes of: Henry Fuseli RA 1741 – 1825; William Blake 1757 – 1827; John Martin 1789 – 1854 and of course Theodor von Holst 1810 – 1844 [who does the first Frankenstein's monster image in a book in 1831]. |

Hulk 213 said:
Let's see if we can get the prelim, the prelim with text, the color prelim, and then the painting into one collectors hands. How cool would that be? I can't swing the price for the final painting so I'm out. But I would be willing to work something out to make this happen for someone. ![]() To get a full run of everything done for a particular SSoC issue would be something. Firstly find out how many different drawings he did (usually two, but sometimes three). From these small pencils, there is then the coloured works of these, which I love. After this, one will artwork will have been chosen by the publishers, and so a large pencil is done, followed by the finished painting. |
