F.F.#100 is a strange bird. Either Kirby didn't want to do a double-size issue or Marvel wouldn't allot the pages for a king-sized book. Whatever the reason, the art is beautiful nonetheless even though the story seems like a hurried retrospective. Great page!

This one has a lot of nostalgia for me. If I recall, the published cover was tinted purple to give it the feel of an alien world. I like this unretouched look better. What an acquisition!

I didn't own the complete book but I recall interiors available for sale about the same time I owned the cover. So, the book was already scattered to the winds.

I genuflect in respect! This is my all-time favorite Cap splash bar none. By drawing the figure of Cap large and also exaggerating his stance, Kirby gives the scene a feeling of power about to be unleashed. Stone's thicker inks add even more strength. Great piece!

Love Kirby, but he wasn't always right just because he was The King. I say the published version is stronger, even if I wish Kirby had drawn it with his likenesses

I agree Marie's cvr. is more dynamic, but it's standard action fare with the hero once again facing danger. On the other hand, Kirby makes the reader ask the question " why are my heroes surrendering to evil?" That's a more powerful moment captured on paper IMHO.

As an adult, I appreciate the subtly but as a kid who read comics for the adventure stories, I admit the drama would've been wasted on me. Knowing his readership, Stan probably made the right call with Marie's version.

According to the Chicago Tribune 9/2/08, the anonymous donor offered Ditko the return of the complete AF #15 story in advance of the donation to the Library of Congress, but he refused.

Kirby only did full pencils on the first eight books and layouts/breakdowns for some issues afterwards. Since Avengers #4 and #7 are assumed complete and MIA, that makes snagging a full Kirby page from these remaining issues quite a rare find indeed. Congratulations!

I have always loved the completely Kirbyesque choice to have dual perspectives going on -- and then to just casually have the knuckles of Subby's hand fuck with the whole thing because it's Jack Kirby doing it.

The obvious answer is when Krang activated his cloaking device he also triggered his holographic visual screen that projects 3-D images of Subby through the skin of his ship . Didn't you know it's standard equipment on all imperial sea-cruisers?!  :)
