My interest in original comic art started in the early 70s as I flipped through the pages of the Comic Buyers Guide and saw adds for Jack Kirby art going for about $20 a page. Of course I was about 10 at the time so $20 might as well of been $20,000. By the time I had the money to make that first purchase, my interests shifted from comics to cars and girls so it wouldn't be until 1991when I bought my first piece of art, a Tom Morgan Alpha Flight splash page, at a small comic book convention in Washington DC. I took that page home and studied it endlessly comparing it to the printed page and memorizing every pen stroke. It was at that point I was fully hooked.
However my purchases were still few and far between since I was in the U.S. Air Force for the entirety of the 80s and 90s, with most of that time spent overseas. As such, CBG remained my primary access point to the hobby. It could be frustrating as I missed out on a lot of great pieces because either my CBG issue was delayed in the mail and a piece I was interested in was already sold, or the unwillingness of some to ship to APO addresses.
I am no longer in the Air Force but I still live overseas (at least for now); however, being geographically displaced isn't the handicap it used to be. I continue to be amazed at not only how much this hobby has grown not just in the U.S. but internationally. I think I am enjoying myself more now than when I first started, and I must say a lot of that is due to this website.
