John Lewis; James Farmer; Roy Wilkins; A. Philip Randolph; Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; Robert Kennedy; President John F. Kennedy; Bayard Rustin; Strom Thurmond; Bull Connor; George C. Wallace; Freedom Riders; members of S.N.C.C.; Ku Klux Klan; mob; police; prison warders; Greyhound employees; President Barack Obama | Lewis continues telling his story. Freedom Riders are met with mob violence, police brutality, unjust imprisonment, and a bitter Kennedy administration. Nonviolent demonstrations continue, climaxing in the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, at which Lewis is one of the six main speakers. He complies to a certain extent with demands that he tone down his speech, but still makes a fierce presentation. Following the March the Kennedy administration becomes more enthusiastic toward civil rights, but the book ends with the murderous 1963 bombing of 16th Street Baptist Church. | |
