John Romita Sr
Legendary Comic Artist John Romita Sr (1930-2023) is best known for his work on Marvel Comics' The Amazing Spider-Man and for co-creating characters like The Punisher. He was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2002. Romita Sr got his start in comics in the late 1940's doing work, sometimes uncredited, for both Timely and Trojan Comics, and in the '50s he worked on a wide variety of horror, romance, war and other genres for Atlas Comics (formerly Timely). During this period he worked on the short-lived revival of Captain America for Atlas, before switching over to DC Comics in 1958 where he worked primarily on romance comics. Of course by 1965 Romita Sr was back at Marvel Comics and learning the Marvel house style of storytelling by penciling over Jack Kirby layouts on Daredevil. When the growing estrangement between Stan Lee and Steve Ditko finally peaked in 1966, Ditko left Marvel abruptly and Romita Sr was asked to take over artistic duties on Spider-Man. While not comfortable at first with the book, John took the web-head mainstream and it was on Spidey where John really left his mark in comics for many fans. Assuming the role of Art Director of Marvel in 1973, Romita Sr also played a major role in the visual direction Marvel's books took, and he designed many new characters like Luke Cage, Bullseye, Tigra, and Wolverine. John Romita Sr is the father of comic artist John Romita Jr.

It fascinates me how from growing up in the 1970s as a kid with little money, I had to work on my paper route to have funds to buy all of the comics I loved as a kid. And growing older I was able to buy more expensive comics as I saved my money while in the U.S. Army at West Point from 1985-1989 and I was able to finally buy my very first pages of comic art in 1989 and it has been an unbelievable roller coaster ride ever since that point trying to find the Amazing Spiderman #1-297 pages and Spiderman strip art from 1-3-1977 to 11-9-1980 I love so dearly and covet!!
