Description

In over 40 years I have never gone out of my way to reacquire a piece of my own art once it was sold, but when this became available recently I just couldn�t pass up the opportunity. I haven�t seen the original anywhere since I first sold it way back when.

I was 20 or 21 and really early into my career when I painted this. It was my fifth SSOC cover, and the first painting overall where I actually felt I was starting to know what I was doing. I�ve always considered it to be a plateau jumper for me and it�s remained my favorite of all the SSOC covers I did. I�m sure the subject matter has a lot to do with my affinity for it, as well! 🙂

While there are a couple of things I would fix or do differently today as I have four decades more experience as a painter, I am thrilled to have it in my possession once again (especially as I was able to use my own art as collateral).
I had forgotten how no scan or photo I�d ever seen of it has ever captured the actual art (including those here), particularly the subtle variety of reds on the huge lion head.

It really is hard to believe this is 40 years old as I remember painting it like it was yesterday.
