Description

As probably being the most powerful superhero of them all, Superman has always been a challenge for many creators in how they approach the action sequences with him. And as readers, we are most likely used to watching him brush off the most forceful of attacks with ease. But that's what intrigues me about this page so much, as you get something you don't often see: Superman struggling to best his foe... and failing!

I really like how the creators used the sci-fi trapping to create a menace that Superman couldn't just whip with a simple wave of his hand. It brings a sense of urgency and gravity to the situation the Man of Steel finds himself in. It makes for a much more tension-filled moment, seeing the most powerful being on the planet being brought down to his knees.

You can't really think of comics in the Silver and Bronze Ages, without thinking of the late (and great) Dick Dillin. His style is almost a benchmark for the era. I really like how he lays out this page with three big and tall panels. The camera slowly closing in on Superman ratchets up the suspense, showcasing just how much of a toll the fight is taking on him. The middle panel especially gets that across, with his facial expression of strain and duress, right before he succumbs in the final panel. We aren't used to seeing him in such a state and it makes for some very compelling visuals. And of all those who've inked Dillin's work, no one has done it better than artist Joe Giella. He brings a slick and polished feel to Dillin's lines, giving them more strength and definition, with thick and bold shadows. It feels classic, yet modern at the same time. It's a very solid collaborative effort by two highly proficient artists.

Dillin's work has become much harder to come by, in recent years, and much more expensive when you do. Fantastic pages of great action, like this one, is certainly one of the reasons for why. And it's just another reason I'm very glad to add this excellent piece to my personal collection!
