DescriptionWhat I expected, was a quicker headsketch. What I got, was an artistic aquarelle painting - from an artist who typically doesn't do those. At FACTS 2023 Spring Edition, the main name for me was the amazing Joëlle Jones (Lady Killer, Catwoman, Batman). I saw her a couple of years ago in Paris, but then, she got swamped by fans & anything but a single, quick signature was impossible. Her visit in my "hometown" of Belgium would be different. I got to her table early & was about 4th or 5th in line. Luckily for me: she was doing free remarks in all of her books so a few people skipped on commissions. Unlucky for me: Joëlle said she wanted to see how her line evolved throughout the day before committing to any kind of commission. She did prepare some blueline pencil (digital, I believe) pieces that she was going to ink and sell that weekend. Those were less my thing, as I had something specific in mind. In the early afternoon, I swung back to her table & mentioned my request. Great: she liked the idea & put me on the list. Pfew, that's taken care of! As mentioned, I had a specific idea. I've always liked the cover of her DC Comics Poster Portfolio with Catwoman & had that in mind as a reference - but with a twist: one with Black Cat. Joëlle smilingly said "Rude!" (as I was asking her to replace Catwoman) and kindly agreed. She said she would try to work something up that'd fit my budget & would be great at the same time. Major win, but for this show, I think she had set her rate for head sketches lower than what I offered & hence, she went off script. Instead of an ink headsketch, I received this gorgeous watercolor painting, mirroring the original in terms of idea & feeling, rather than in the exact same execution. The hands are "missing", but the focus gets drawn completely by something else entirely. As with the original Catwoman illustration, the piercing eyes are key here: seductive & mysterious, but very confident. Hey, I think that actually sums up Black Cat (and Catwoman for that matter) in a couple of words? Definitely, my score of that convention. This piece is 9x12, done in pencils, inks & watercolors.
