Description

It is said that every story has a beginning. And in the world of comics, those tales are often called the "origin story." And there are few characters with as well known an origin, as that of Tony Stark (aka, Iron Man)!

We all know the story of how this mega-rich weapons maker gets injured and has a piece of shrapnel lodged near his heart, but with his own genius and the help of Profesor Yinsen, he devises a chestplate that, not only helps to keep him alive, but creates one of the most powerful and iconic superheroes of the Silver Age! While some might see a mere retelling of his historical beginnings as pretty boring, part of what makes this reiteration of his origins interesting, is how it ties them with someone who would become one of his most hated arch-enemines: The Mandarin!

Artwise, this is also a beginning of sorts. For we not only see the start of Tony's journey to becoming Iron Man, but the start of artist Paul Ryan's run as the artist for the series. This was his first issue on the book, so retelling the character's origin seems a perfect vehicle to spotlight a whole new art team. This specific page was of interest to me, because it shows the key moment of Tony's origin, that sets him on the path to becoming Iron Man. Outside of the first reveal of him being in the full armor, I can't think of a better page to own from his origin. I also like the little sketches on the back of the page, as well. I wonder what they were for and if they were actually used to create something else. Fitting that they are on the back of a page to a character's origin, since that gives these sketches a bit of a mysterious origin of their own, don't you think?

As the old adage goes: "It's always best to start at the beginning." That's a sentiment I'd be hard pressed to disagree with, especially when it pertains to obtaining a great piece of comic art from an iconic character's origin (even if it is just an updated retelling of it).
