On the eve of Comic Art Live X this past November, Jiggy of Next Comic Art hosted a drop featuring amazing tribute pieces by the many artists he represents. One such piece was a recreation of David Finch's cover to Action Comics no. 894 by an artist named, "Ruvel".

I was too slow on my phone keyboard to make the claim, but I immediately reached out to inquire about a commission. Since the Finch study was the only work I had seen by Ruvel, I chose to stay with that style and requested a tribute to the title page of Wonder Woman no. 44, which is an iconic image of a slain heroine.

I requested that Ruvel reverse the layout and swap the titular character with Death of the Endless. And rather than having an arrow piercing her chest, I opted to have a rose growing from the wound. I felt that floral stigmata would add a level of allegory and classical art reference that infers a completely different narrative about the concept of death. Without death, would all things become immortal?

Since the oposite of death is life, and since a flowering rose has been ornamental of life as a fleeting reality, the dichotomy felt right.

Due to recent health concerns I was unable to attend OAX, but I arranged to have my good friend Daryl pick-up in my stead. This illustration exceeded all expectation. I absolutely adore it. The brushed inks give it a depth of feel that would completely absent otherwise.
