Savage! Sensational! She-Hulk!

As with countless others, the divine Ms. Walters will always be more “sensational” than “savage” to me, but what’s not to love about a David Finch spread showcasing a gamma-sized loss of control? This one is all about sheer, visceral power, and no other piece in my collection comes close to packing this much of a wallop when seen in person. It… is impressive.

Danny Miki’s incredible inks imbue the piece with the patented amount of detail we have all come to expect from Mr. Finch; from the dust and smoke swirling behind them, to the monstrous size of the central figure (and her hair on the black background!), to the mud-spattered grille and treads on the tires of the truck heading Cap’s way, there is no question that David and Danny were fully invested in this project.

K Gearon pointed out to me that this is a double page “version” of one of David’s favorite single-page layout structures: a large splashy image comprising the left half of the page, and a tier of panels telling “the rest of the story” on the right. What’s fun here is that the truck’s left fender, Cap’s head, and the piece of rubble to Cap’s right are all subtly popped out in front of those right-side panels, lending extra dimension and imperative to Cap’s present situation (you can almost feel the blow in panel two).

This was an absolutely fantasmagorical “checking of the box” for me which required parting with a treasured piece of art so that I could leverage it into this one (the same old story… :) ). I can’t thank F M and K Gearon enough for their roles as sounding boards, sages, and shamen through the process - thank you sincerely, gentlemen.
