Here’s a special treat for Halloween week...

Bernie Wrightson's first Frankenstein plate-- and largest by far at 20" x 14”— for his seminal work, Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus. Many consider his meticulously detailed, engraving-quality plates among the greatest achievements by any comic artist. This plate was published 5 years earlier in A Look Back (1978) and signifies when Wrightson’s vision is literally brought to life! Kicked off a 7-year painstaking effort (and labor of love) by the legendary artist to illustrate Mary Shelley’s classic novel.

Wrightson chose a dramatic scene when Dr. Frankenstein confronts his Monster, a key moment in the story. Twice-up 20” x 14” image dwarfs other plates (16” x 11”), Frankenstein’s monster alone is 15” tall! Perhaps Wrightson realized that drawing 40+ plates twice-up with such intricate details would be overwhelming, switched to smaller boards for the remaining plates...yet still took six years to complete.

A Look Back page 284 highlights this first plate with Wrightson commenting: “A lot of people have never read the book…and this is going to be their idea of Frankenstein as I visualize the scene for them. That is the purpose of illustration.” For this Wrightson fan, it doesn’t get much better than this.

I'm proud and humbled to own this unique and historic Wrightson Frankenstein plate, a cornerstone piece for my collection….and a monstrous Happy Halloween to CAF!
