Description

Grave of the Fireflies is a heart wrenching story about World War II involving Seita and Setsuko: the characters that Tony Moy so beautifully painted in this piece. This anime is by Studio Ghibli. The same studio that brought joyful films such as My Neighbour Totoro, Ponyo and one of my all time favorite films from this studio: Spirited Away. Grave of the Fireflies is a significant departure in terms of mood and messaging from these films.

I first saw this movie when I was in a senior in high school. The film almost broke me. It deepened my understanding of war and how it affects the general populace as most films in this genre focus on the soldiers and those doing the fighting. To me, this film needs to be talked in the same breath as Schindler's List. Yes, it's that impactful.

When Tony posted this piece on his Instagram account, I had to inquire about its availability. Thankfully it was. I purchased this piece for my daughter. The intention is to use this as a conversational starter to talk about war and the affects it has on people. Though it's been a while since I saw the film, it continues to leave a lasting impact 20+ years later. Thank you Tony for creating this stunning piece on a film that has stayed with me all these years.
