DescriptionCarol Day 1592, 1961 by David Wright, from the Caribbean Captives story. When it comes to collecting comic book art, I know what I like, but I often struggle to articulate exactly why I love a specific piece of art. Therefore, when my good friend and superb artist – Alex Sheikman gave me his thoughts about a recent acquisition, I knew he had precisely described the technical reasons why I loved this Carol Day strip. “CD 1952 is a wonderful example of a thoughtful approach to visual storytelling. Great compositions and intricate pen and brush ink drawing in every panel. Panel 1: Amazing jungle scene - that would fit right into any EC story rendered by the likes of Al Williamson. The line work delineates different textures between rocks, tree trunks, and leafage. The jungle looks full and lush, with the men easily standing out. Panel 2: Wow! What a beautiful portrait of Carol! And maybe even more impressive is how Wright pushed the second character into the background by utilizing fine line work to define the contours of his face and costume. Cleverly, the image is split into foreground, midground, and background going from light to dark. Panel 3: The genius of David Wright is that from panel to panel, he played with his compositions and how he utilized different values. This is another beautiful shot of Carol, she just "pops" as the only face that is pure white in the otherwise fully rendered panel. Comparing this panel to the previous one, it can be seen that unlike Panel 2, in which Wright used pen rendering to push the cigar smoker into the background, in this panel he deftly used the rendering to bring him up into the foreground. Fantastic!" Alex Sheikman I was watching the 1942 classic film – Casablanca the other night and I realized that what I like about Carol Day is that it has a classic noir cinematic feel to it. The dark shadows. smoky atmosphere, the beautiful women who can tell a story with just a glance. Those vintage films used sharp contrast, low lighting, and dark shadows to such a dramatic effect – just as David Wright did with such brilliance on Carol Day. Social/Sharing |
