Description“The stuff that dreams are made of.”I landed the Russ Manning cover art for Tarzan and the Immortal Centurian in the January 2025 Heritage auction. It was a very rare auction win for me. This cover came out of the legendary Roger Hill collection. Roger and I were both members of the CFA APA, but during those 16 years, I wasn’t aware that he owned this great Manning cover. Russ Manning is known primarily for three comic series: Tarzan, Magnus Robot Fighter, and Star Wars. Of the three, the art from Tarzan is by far the hardest to acquire. To the best of my knowledge, the art from the Gold Key Tarzan series was destroyed, and the art for the Tarzan newspaper strip is nearly totally owned by the Burrough Estate. Manning’s art in the daily and Sunday newspaper strips is spectacular. The only Manning Tarzan art that comes to market is from the four original graphic novels that he wrote and drew for the European market in the early to late 70s. The four graphic novels are Tarzan in the Land That Time Forgot, Tarzan in Savage Pellucidar, Tarzan and The Pool of Time, and Tarzan and The Beastmaster. The covers and interior art in these books are stunning. All four covers and the interior pages have survived and are in the hands of collectors. I recently discovered that Manning also produced three additional Tarzan tales. Tarzan and The Immortal Centurion, Tarzan and the Glorious, and Tarzan and Buffalo Bill’s Wild Africa Show. Internet searches indicate that he drew the cover and interior pages for Tarzan and the Immortal Centurion. He drew the interior pages for Tarzan and the Glorious, however I cannot find a cover image for this tale. He also drew the covers for three other obscure stories, Tarzan and Buffalo Bill’s Wild Africa Show and Tarzan and the Tuareg Queen, and Tarzan and The Monster Men. I believe the interior pages for the first two stories were produced by Dave Stevens and Mike Royer. I can find no images for the interior art for Tarzan and The Monster Men. The only published versions of Tarzan and The Immortal Centurion, Tarzan and the Glorious, Tarzan and Buffalo Bill’s Wild Africa Show, and Tarzan and the Tuareg Queen were in the B&W UK series Tarzan Weekly in 1977. As talented as Russ Manning was, he seldom got the job to produce cover art. I believe his total catalogue of Tarzan cover art consists of: • Tarzan in the Land That Time Forgot • Tarzan in Savage Pellucidar • Tarzan and The Pool of Time • Tarzan and The Beastmaster • Tarzan and The Immortal Centurion • Tarzan and the Glorious • Tarzan and Buffalo Bill’s Wild Africa Show • Tarzan and the Tuareg Queen • Tarzan and The Monster Men Social/Sharing |
