Description

A beautiful (IMHO) example of the Flash Gordon strip by Alex Raymond. Flash Gordon was created by Raymond and began in January 7, 1934. I think many of us take Flash Gordon and it's impact on Science Fiction for granted. Raymond, considered by many as one of the best illustrators of all time can also be thought of (because of Flash) as one of the fathers of SciFi.

I was lucky enough to grab this piece with the matching Jungle Jim "topper." Jungle Jim was a entirely separate strip created to compete with Tarzan, and printed above Flash Gordon in the Sunday comics (the being called a topper).

Raymond's use of inks to convey light, shadow and tone are evident here. The facial expressiveness he was able to evoke in his strips is unmatched today.

In the early years of the strip he used a dry brush technique in inking much like the pulp illustrators of the time, in the second half of the 30's his style changed to a heavier line, more sharp and (I believe) allowing more expression in his characters. His later work (after he returned from WWII) in Rip Kirby provides a good example of the evolution of his talent.
