DescriptionCaptain America was never high on my radar growing up—until the Marvel Cinematic Universe reintroduced him as the ultimate underdog with the heart of a lion. Chris Evans’ portrayal transformed Cap from a forgotten Golden Age relic into an A-tier icon for a new generation. As a lifelong Magic: The Gathering fan, I never imagined a world where Marvel and MTG would collide. And Now? I can actually run Captain America as my Commander. I’ve been hunting for the right equipment-based General for a long time. I wanted someone that felt iconic, and this Cap delivers on every front. Since the card was released, Cap has been the only deck I’ve played! (Ask my playgroup!) Furthermore, I now have the very first definitive Marvel x Magic card’s art hanging on my office wall—the perfect backdrop for all my Zoom calls and Live Streams! As Ryan shared: “Marvel Superheroes were an important influence on me as a young artist and certainly contributed to my decision to be an illustrator. So when I was tasked with painting Captain America throwing his shield, I felt that this was important to me professionally and personally. Cap is shown in his costume that’s unique to the MtG/Marvel crossover. I presented my Art Director Cassie Murphy with a couple options for throwing poses and she thought this pose best fit the card mechanics. The painting itself has areas that have a gentle canvas texture, like on Cap’s face and costume, but the fiery background has areas with texture built up to catch light and enhance the chaotic nature of the battle.” Painted with oil on stretched canvas. Framed in a metallic red floated frame, matching that of Cap’s shield, with the art itself measuring 24" x 30" (61cm x 76cm) without frame, it’s a centerpiece that feels as powerful as the hero it depicts.
