DescriptionA Fables HalloweenBy Mark Buckingham Pencil & ink on 11 x 17 in. comic board Not for Sale A while back, Malcolm Bourne posted to his CAF gallery a gorgeous Miracleman & Miraclewoman commission by Mark Buckingham. I left a comment of praise and Malcolm quite graciously reached out and advised how I could get in touch with Mark's representation if I was interested in booking an illustration of my own. I took about a day to think of what I wanted and sent a message to Joseph Melchior (Mark's rep) asking if it would be possible to get a cover-quality image of Snow White and Bigby Wolf (from FABLES) taking all of their kids Trick 'r Treating —dressed as the Endless from SANDMAN. I assigned a specific character to each, with Snow White specifically dressed as Death and Bigby as John Constantine. Each of the seven Wolf Cubs was selected to be Dream, Delirium, Destiny, Desire, Despair, and Destruction, as well as Golden Age Sandman, Wesley Dodds, based on their individual personalities and likenesses. All of the candy baskets are Jack'o Lanterns in tribute to Merv Pumpkinhead (and my own childhood candy receptacle), and the POV is from the front porch on Halloween night. Mark Buckingham's commission schedule allowed for him to complete the drawing just ahead of last year's San Diego Comicon and I arranged to have Mikail Lotia receive it from Joseph, and for Jeff Wedding to get it from Mikail so that I can pick it up from Jeff after the show ended. I had not seen a sketch nor a progress shot nor any image whatsoever, so I was absolutely blown away when Jeff sent me a shot of it from the convention floor. The level of completion on this is that of an omnibus or Vertigo Jam cover. Mark intuitively understood what I wanted and exceeded what I had imagined. His familiarity with these characters as co-creator elevates this to a true once-in-a-lifetime acquisition. You can tell that it's Snow White dressed as Death, and not Death herself. Most notably, Mark is the only person to have drawn both in an official capacity at DC/Vertigo. Many thanks to all the CAF friends involved but especially to Mark Buckingham whose work I've exhibited several times in my capacity as Gallery Director (first at La Luz de Jesus and then at Gallery 30 South), beginning with the first Pop Sequentialism show and published catalog back in 2011. This stunning piece will be treasured and continue to give me joy for a long, long time. Social/Sharing |
