I'm very happy to add a wonderful Frank King Gasoline Alley daily to the collection. This piece was published on July 6, 1932, and while I really love many different periods of King's work, the early 30s are just about my favorite. King wielded some wonderful brush work during this time, and his figures moved with such ease. I also really dig King's stories of history. In real life, King took his family on many road trips, and used those trips as the basis for stories intertwined with history in the strip. In this example, Walt, Phyllis and Skeezix are visiting Pittsburgh, with Walt relating the story of a young Major named George Washington who crossed the Allegheny river in 1753. Washington was a freshly minted Major at the time, all of 21 years old, and volunteered to get a message to the French, who the British felt were encroaching on their territory. King took some liberty in this strip, as Washington did not ride his horse across the river, but attempted to cross it with surveyor Christopher Gist on a hastily made raft, due to the river not be frozen over yet. The men failed, but were able to swim to a small island, crossing the river the next day when it was frozen over enough.

There's some gorgeous brush work in this piece, and I've added a detail of the final panel, so you can have a better view that work.
