DescriptionI’ve been unsure about posting this since I received it. To me, it marks the end of my pursuit of original art in the way I’ve approached the hobby since I started collecting. When I began my journey, I never imagined I could afford a published piece by Frank Miller. Over the past 24 months, the fair market value of his work made that desire seem impossible.Frank Miller’s work stirs something in my soul. Maybe it has to do with his run on Daredevil coinciding with me being in my last 2 years of high school. He was creating a comic that was pushing the boundaries of what the art form would morph into - stories for young adults. I was becoming a young adult. Fast forward to 2017. I start looking at the OA hobby and I am shocked by what Frank Miller’s fair market value is on pieces. Yikes! When I first started collectIng his work, I decided I would focus on Frank Miller pieces that fit into my budget and match my experience level. Most of those pieces I’ve acquired, like many other pieces in my collection, have never been posted on CAF. My Miller collection began with a comic book - remarked by Frank Miller, followed by a convention sketch. Then I purchased a sketch from a private signing. Later, I stretch my budget to buy the commission (the Captain America peace) I’ve posted. It was purchased in an auction. It wasn’t done for me. At that point, I continued to buy sketches or pieces that caught my eye, but I never thought that I’d be able to add a published work to my collection. Then, by good fortune, I was able to acquire this particular piece. It was created to benefit the firefighters widows, orphans, and disabled firefighters fund. Mr. Miller generously allowed the fund to use the image on T-shirts, along as it being used as the organization’s logo and branding. According to HA.com the party that provided it to be auction off donated their proceeds to the charity. It’s taken a lot of words to get to my point. I landed the piece that fulfills what was supposed to be unreachable. I never thought this would happen. I doubt that my perspective on that will ever change. I feel a bit lost, but not in a bad way. I come to the conclusion that having started in 2017 by buying the Capullo McFarlane Spawn Splash and ending it with this Frank Miller piece in 2025 is a very nice set of bookends to surround my collection within. I hope that everyone in the hobby has as much luck and joy in adding pieces to their collection as I’ve had!! (I’ll start posting art I own but have never shared on CAF. That seems like a safe way to remain a part of the hobby that I enjoy.) As always, thanks for looking. (If you read this I appreciate your time!) Social/Sharing |
