DescriptionOh no! Harley has amputated Catwoman at the knees! Not really; that's just how the original cel was painted before cropping it for broadcast. For many fans, the 1990s Batman animated series captured the essence of the caped crusader better than any other film or television series. Bruce Timm's character designs and Paul Dini's writing supervision made a memorable combination over the course of 85 episodes, winning numerous Emmy Awards along the way. It also kickstarted a series of connected DC Animated Universe series which are still running today. One episode, consistently ranked at or near the top, currently holds a 9.2 rating on IMBD. In "Almost Got 'Im," four of Batman's foes play cards; Joker cheats, of course. Each villain in turn boasts about a time when he (or she, for Poison Ivy) nearly bested Batman. Shoulda, coulda, woulda! Dini structured the episode as a series of flashback vignettes, each adapting a classic comic book story briefly, and narrated by its respective villain. (Spoiler alert) Joker tells his story last, with Catwoman barely rescuing Batman from electrocution. But this last tale isn't quite done when the card game ends, because Harley Quinn (in her second appearance ever) has strapped Catwoman to an industrial conveyor belt, intending to turn her into cat food and send her to Batman in cans. Hey, kids! Comics! Er, cartoons! Pretty graphic for children's programming. So the cel seen here is the pivotal moment from the climax of the most acclaimed episode of the most acclaimed DC series, starring the most significant character which DC has produced in the last thirty years (or more). Bask in its wonder! This cel was discussed on the CAF+ weekly update on October 13, 2025. P.S. animation cels are usually painted with vinyl-based paint, but that's not an allowed media type on CAF, so I used "acrylic." Social/Sharing |
