DescriptionComplete title is "Doctor Star & The Kingdom of Lost Tomorrows: From the World of Black Hammer," written by Jeff Lemire, April 2018. Published by Dark Horse. Due to DC's copyright concerns, in 2021 Dark Horse trades renamed the superhero Doctor Andromeda and removed the star from his uniform."Wonder Woman: The Hiketeia" introduced me to JG's art, leading me to ask him for a Wonder Woman in the original sketchbook around 2005 and JSA book in 2010, both on CAF. During this time he was principal cover artist for the DC crisis event I was reading. He pencilled and inked all the covers of DC's ambitious weekly "52" book (!) as well as "Villains United" miniseries. For "Final Crisis" he pencilled and inked interiors of most of the book as well as painted all the covers. I often look through his portfolios at cons for a cover that speaks to me. It took 15 years, but I finally found--or noticed?--this one in his portfolio at Baltimore Con in 2025. It called out to me with its beautiful depiction of an alternate universe JSA superhero--in the DC books Starman--in a Golden Age setting of perhaps his first donning of a patchwork uniform with retro cosmic rod. Love it! Plot: An aged crime fighter desperately wants to reconnect with his estranged son, who he hoped would one day take the mantle of Doctor Star. Over the course of the story we learn his World War II-era origin, how he got his powers, his exciting astral adventures, the formation of some of Black Hammer's greatest heroes, and more in this heartbreaking superhero tale about fathers and sons. (Source: Amazon.com) Lemire: "It started as a love-letter to James and Starman, but became one of the most personal and autobiographical stories I have ever done. I don’t want to get to deep into my personal life, so I will leave it at that. But I wrote all four issues in a week and it was one of the most emotional creative experiences I ever had. I am happy that it seems to have really resonated with people." (Source: "INTERVIEW: Jeff Lemire opens up about BLACK HAMMER, writing superheroes, & trying new things" by Alex Dueben, The Beat, 2019) From Doctor Star to Doctor Andromeda: "I have been cagey about this because the honest truth is that there was a legal issue with the name and its similarity to another publisher’s character and there is very little I can actually discuss. But we worked it out very amicably with that other publisher and we agreed to change his name and costume a bit. Not any drama or anything, it was all very civil. The good thing is the name changed, but the story is exactly the same. And that original printing of Doctor Star trades and floppies will probably be collector’s items to a degree now, I guess."
