François Avril

François Avril steals the silhouettes of elegant women with the tip of his pencil. He puts notes of jazz in the evenings of Paris. He transforms cities into theaters of graphic adventures. Magazine or advertising illustrator, cartoonist and children's book designer, the Parisian artist born in 1961 is a master of simple lines, weightless shapes and poetic color. After a dazzling debut in the fanzine Band 'à Part, he published refined albums with distinguished aesthetics such as Doppelgänger SA, Le voleur de ballerines or Le chemin des 3 places. His hand scratched covers for Lire and Liberation. He distinguished himself with mastery in children's books. Printmaking, engraving, press cartoons, advertising: everything interests him in drawing. His originals travel between Geneva and Amsterdam. He draws New York at the same time as he paints Cancale. This naive fake exhibits his talent from Paris to Tokyo. He can draw Manhattan and Brussels, at the same time as he paints Perros Guirec. In watercolor, colored pencil, acrylic or oil pastel, his eye is always eager to explore new forms of creation. As at home in miniatures as on monumental canvases, he displays an aesthetic purity sometimes close to abstraction. His works ignite curiosity. With François Avril, one detail is enough to disrupt the meaning of perception. Its inspiration is nourished by the founding masters of American comics and the giants of the Franco-Belgian Golden Age. Figurehead of the Pigalle School with Jacques de Loustal or Dupuy and Berbérian, this minimalist of the line reinvents the 9th Art since the 1980s, of his fragile pencil strokes always in search of the essential line. |
