John Severin

John Severin (1921-2012) was an American comics artist noted for his with EC Comics, primarily on the war comics Two-Fisted Tales and Frontline Combat, and with Marvel Comics, especially its war and Western comics. Severin had an unforgettable 45-year run with the satiric magazine Cracked. He was one of the founding cartoonists of Mad in 1952. The first issue of MAD was written almost entirely by Harvey Kurtzman, and featured illustrations by Kurtzman, Wally Wood, Will Elder, and Jack Davis. John is well known for his work on several Marvel characters including the Hulk, Sgt Fury, and Conan. Severin stayed active in comics into this century and he was also inducted into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame in 2003 prior to his passing in 2012 at the age of 90. His skillful sister Marie Severin was also a colorist at EC before taking her talents as a colorist and illustrator to Marvel Comics' famous Bullpen. |
