Thomas Ott was born on June 10, 1966 in Bern and spent his entire childhood in Birmensdorf, near Zurich. From the age of 16, he attended a graphic design school, the Kunstgewerbeschule, which led him, at the end of his studies, to the profession of designer. Thomas Ott approaches graphics in a very composite way but very quickly, this passionate about cinema, nourished by comics and noir novels, appropriates the technique of the scratch card. With infinite patience, the artist scratches with the tip of a cutter the black layer covering the white surface of a cardboard. As for an etching, almost no right to false movement for this technique which supposes to anticipate the drawing which already exists mentally or in sketches before the artist takes hold of his cutter to make one emerge from the darkness. infinity of white hatching. For all his fellow designers, Thomas Ott has become the master of this technique. With an incisive and precise drawing, he forges the sharp outlines of his dark, violent and sometimes offbeat universe. The first short storiescompiled in the album Tales of Error (Modern Edition, 1989) and in the anthology RIP (L'Association, 2010) with long stories - Cinema Panopticum (L'Association, 2005), The Number (L'Association, 2008) or his Travel Book unrolling Route 66 (Louis Vuitton Travel Books - 2018), we find his striking framing, filled with this expressionist light, a source of worry and dread. If the tone oscillates between black humor and creaking irony depending on the project, precision and profusion remain constant throughout his work. |
