Description

Luis M. Roca drew three stories for Warren Publishing during a particularly dynamic period for black and white comic magazines in the early '70s. These were The Escape! by Larry Herndon, in Vampirella #11, Lover of the Bayou by Jan Strnad, in #17, and The Trap by Greg Potter, in Eerie #36.

According to TwoMorrows' excellent Warren book, The Escape! was the first appearance of one of S.I.'s Spanish artists in Warren magazines, which basically changed everything about them, to the chagrin of some of us who preferred the classic American artists which were primarily featured before.

I bought this from Larry Shell, who described the fetching femme here as Asian. I'm not sure. What do you think? And what's the significance of the necklace entwined at her feet, and how does it pertain to the werewolf? What story is being told here, I'm intrigued enough to wonder?

As comic art prices escalate into absurdity, I find myself increasingly drawn to affordable and attractive fantasy pieces like these, particularly if a beautiful nude is part of the composition.

I believe it was Sal Quartuccio of SQP who told me that Luis Roca died some time in the last decade.

I agree, Fantastic piece! I would say Asian yes, but more of the island influence of southern Asia rather than stereotypical Chinese/Japanese that people think when you say Asian, since you asked.

This is a beautiful piece. It's always impressive when an artist put his subject in a non standard pose and it's like "Wow!"
