DescriptionRuss once told me that, early in their careers, he and John Severin had a friendly rivalry about who could create the most historically accurate western and war comics. One day Russ was visiting Severin's studio and saw a copy of the pattern guides provided to the suppliers of the Union Army uniforms sitting on a desk. Severin was using them to make sure he had all of the seams in the right places when drawing a Civil War story. Russ conceded the accuracy title to Severin but set his goal on creating heightened realism that would be more dramatic than Severin's pages. I think this spread is a perfect example of that heightened realism.Social/Sharing |

Explosive DPS! And great historic description of two masters of war art and their approaches.

You freed up the art for the fingers! I think that is an interesting aspect of this art. Having seen it in person, there was tape over the right hand fingers on the figure being blown up. This tape was there pre-printing as the fingers are cut off in the printed version but now we can see the art under the tape. This splash is explosive!

Thanks so much Jeff for letting me know about these outstanding pages.
