DescriptionDetective #519 Splash by Don Newton and John Calnan!OK, so trying to be tongue in cheek, so, Art is my drug, and Don Newton one of my drugs of choice. Part of the overall deal I did with Will Gabri-El included this Don Newton splash to Detective #519. I just love the way that Batman is overseeing Gotham with the full moon above him. Perfect title splash. Sets the tone for the story perfectly with Batman perched high above Gotham in the night. Great Newton example. (also one of my favorite bat artists)

Newton was so under appreciated. It's such a shame he passed so early.

Completely agreed. Newton was on fire with the Batman and Detective issues he did in the early '80s. His Batman and Jason Todd Robin are unmistakable and I can't get enough of his layouts and spectacular lighting and shading.

He was incredible. And Alcala was my favorite inker on him. I can't imagine anyone else drawing Detective #526. Can you?

Splendid splash (even though Calnan was clearly not his best inker. Not always fan of Alcala either. I find that his more illustrative style stiffened Newton's which was all about the fluidity of movement. For me they only gelled on rare occasions such as illustrations or quiet splashes. I personally much prefer the smoother inks on Newton like Adkins, Hunt...Not that you asked me ;).

All good my friend. We all have different likes. Makes the world go round! Don's art was so great, that he made it easier for inkers!
