Description

This is an Artist Proof of the Barry Windsor-Smith "The Witch" print from the best portfolio set of all time! Published in 1977-1978 by Collector's Press, this is a piece from Volume 1 of The National Cartoonists Society Portfolio of Fine Comic Art. These were released in a limited number and were signed and numbered out of 500, I believe. This one is an Artist Proof (AP) version rather than a numbered one, signed by the man himself at the bottom in pencil. The printing was done on high end archival paper and the proof looks incredible in person. BWS really goes all out on the detail and linework and hatching. It's breathtaking, truly. Man, how I wish it were the original!

Having been born in the mid-70's, I grew up around art as my dad was into comics, sci-fi and fantasy and my mom had Maxfield Parrish prints hung in various rooms of the house. Classical-style fine art, as was being done by the members of The Studio at the time, was something I was really fascinated by when I first saw it. I stumbled onto some of my dad's old collectibles in the early '80s and he had a bunch of these old prints. Although I didn't know names or anything, I would later come to realize that BWS was the one who did many of my favorites. So BWS art from this era is my all time grail, and as his prices have been skyrocketing over the years, I have come to accept that I will never be able to own any of the originals unless I win the lottery. So when I came across this one for sale and in fantastic shape, I figured I should just get it and frame it up. It looks so nice, it'll look just like an original on my wall:)
