Description

Planet of the Damned (“PotD”) was written by Pat Mills (first issue) and Alan Hebden (the rest of the story) under a pen names and ran in the first ten issues of Starlord. It featured a “death world” into which people were transported via the Bermuda Triangle but unlike 2000ad’s “Death Planet” of the same era – which, in comparison to PotD, should have been called “Squabbling Sci-Fi Cosplayers Bicker With Swords-and-Sorcery Cosplayers In A Really Rather Scenic Place That Looks A Bit Like New Mexico”, even though it was also written by Mr Hebden – well, PotD was a pretty brutal place and scared the bejesus out of me when I read it way back when.

When rivers and lakes weren’t toxic, they were acidic. When the local aliens weren’t spitting acid at you, it was raining acid. When cute little aliens weren’t trying to eat you, fellow survivors were. When giant alien birds weren’t trying to catch you, Nazis were. When the sentient flora wasn’t trying to eat you, it would inadvertently kill you in a bumbled act of kindness. When you find a place called “Sanctuary”, you’re more likely to die than before you found it.

I’m not knocking “Death Planet”, which was pretty good and recently reprinted with the Megazine. PotD hasn’t been reprinted but was a cracking sci-fi/horror that came to an abrupt end. The full story can be read here: http://www.starlordcomic.com/html/by_strip_001_02_damned.html

I've still not read PotD in it's entirety, but have very fond - and vivid - memories of reading this in Starlord as a kid. The Ab-humans and the thirst-quenching plants are pretty unforgettable stuff and it would be great to see this reprinted. Great page, by the way!
