DescriptionThis is probably the least “wow” page from “The Terror” that I own -- no Dredd, no Judges, no terrorists being fed to robot dinosaurs, no explosions, no cityscapes, no shootouts in the ghost train at a fun fair, no action – but it’s a page that sums up the spirit of both the story and its telling, so it gets to be the page that I upload.Like “The Pit”, “The Terror” has a much different focus than most Dredd stories. These are more like police procedurals that focus on the depiction of judges investigating and solving crimes. In “The Terror”, the Justice Department is trying to prevent a pro-democracy terrorist group called “Total War” from denoting a nuclear bomb within the city to allegedly further their cause by killing millions. In most fictional dystopias, the totalitarian police state officials are the baddies, for the hero to overthrow or to succumb to, but here they are the goodies, for the reader to root for, for the most part. Only in 2000ad are the totalitarians presented as the good guys -- or, rather, the least worst of the available options. As was the case in “The Pit”, the story here at times becomes a soap opera but one that’s about the ordinary inhabitants of Mega-City One rather than the judges of Sector 301. Like “America”, one of the finest Dredd tales and which gets referenced here with the inclusion of Bennet Beeney block, “The Terror” advances the slow-burning “Democracy” storyline and puts citizens at the heart of the story. The judges get so caught up in the will-they-won’t-they of the terrorist Sonny Castilenno and the university lecturer Zondra Smith’s relationship that Dredd has to warn his team, “How did this turn into a soap opera? Keep your minds on your job!” Colin Macneil switches the colours of pages when the point-of-view switches back and forth between from blue for Sonny and red or green for the judges who have him under surveillances. Photographs don’t do Macneil’s work justice here – each page is huge, detailed, with vibrant colours. I’ve put most of the other pages I own below as additional images. Social/Sharing |
