Golden's ability to maintain an almost garrishly cartoony look to his human characters in the midst of a very serious reality based story, is a testament to his strength's as an artist and storyteller. IMHO he choose to depict human beings this way to help counterbalance the (what could be construed as) overly serious tone of these stories. Very Mike Ploog of him and it works to great effect!
