Oh wow, this illustration.

I thought I was imagining it at first, when I glimpsed what looked like the influence of editorial cartoonist Ron Cobb in Cameron Stewart's Vertigo mini-series with Jason Aaron about the Vietnam War.

But here it is again, at least to my eyes, in an unpublished splash that doesn't appear in the serialization. (It may be in the collection, however, which I don't own.) For comparison of styles, see Cobb's Raw Sewage or My Fellow Americans (Price/Stern/Sloan and Sawyer Press, 1970).

I'm knocked out by this unflinching drawing. There's a great deal of human pain and of humanity in this composition, and a hell of a powerful commentary.

Waging war to attain peace has always been a debatable notion, and it always will be, unfortunately.

Ironic that this should get posted on a week in history in which we Americans find ourselves talking about "limited strikes" again, in yet another country.

So it goes, as Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. used to say on this subject.

I'm not surprised this went unpublished. The Japanese are the most notorious when it comes to whitewashing/denial of their history, but it happens here, too: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/13/education/13texas.html?_r=0

What a fantastic piece. If he kept this one in his pocket, it really shows how much of Stewart's soul was in this book.
