DescriptionIn this small sketch is everything I love about Frazetta, and in all great pen and ink work. Why is this sketch even appealing? Rationally, it makes no sense -- the image is distorted and inaccurate, there are squiggles where there should be hands, and lines are going everywhere. And yet, somehow, in those squiggles and lines Frazetta captures what only a tiny number of artists can -- the incredible power of the human form in motion. Looking at this sketch, you can feel the movement, the pushing off of the man's leg, the pumping of his arms. I don't know exactly how Frazetta evokes such a response in such a simple sketch -- but he does, and very few others (Krenkel? Coll?) can capture that same feel. Its just a tiny sketch, but it is proudly hanging on my wall, and in the short time I have owned it I have already spent more time staring at it then most other pieces in my collection. This is almost certainly a prelim for an Ace Book illustration from the 1960s -- it has the same "F" signature from that time, and the same line feel. If anyone has seen it published, please let me know!Social/Sharing |

Lovely gestural flow throughout... a lovely gem by Frazetta!

The movement may have something to do with the suggestive tail shape too.
