Description

Most of you know that I’m a mature-age geek/nerd who’s been reading SF/Fantasy for around 45 years, collecting comics for around 40 years and original comic art for around 26 years.

One of my fave authors since school days is Robert E. Howard who created Conan (and other fantastic heroes) and I loved his books along with the Marvel comics adaptations including Conan and Savage Sword of Conan (SSOC). One of my all-time fave SSOC stories was the adaptation of “Beyond the Black River” illustrated by John Buscema and Tony DeZuniga (SSOC 26 and 27) and I was thrilled to win a recent eBay auction for an original page from that story. My first John Buscema (and Tony DeZuniga) page – woohoo!

Gotta love DeZuniga's gritty, expressive inks over JB on these stories... and this is a mighty fine example. Hard to comprehend taking this long in the hobby to acquire one, but you have it now!

Haha, Drake, I've been searching for a decent Buscema/DeZuniga SSOC for some time but budget restrictions (which you don't suffer from? ;)) didn't allow me to pick one up before now! This time around, I had the necessary funds and gave it my best shot :)

Ironically, "Drake Tungsten" in the Wajarri language translates as "budget restrictions!" This page has most everything you'd want in a JB/DeZuniga SSOC page... the killer portraiture, Tony's memorable zipatone work, a story-within-a-story, and a little concluding homily to cap it all off!

LOL! Mate, just checked out your impressive selection of John Buscema pages - love the Buscema/Alcala and Buscema/DeZuniga Conan pieces in particular!

I bought SSOC 26 and 27 off the stands of a Tampa magazine store as a kid. It was and still is one of the more remarkable stories adapted to comic form in the capable hands of John Buscema and Tony DeZuniga. The Picts were truly terrifying and savage warriors.Congrats on getting the wrap up page of a memorable tale.

Perfect closer to one of my all-time favorite REH stories, congrats! Love how Roy Thomas threw in that last line in the last panel—it's the argument REH had thru correspondence with H.P. Lovecraft, BARBARISM WINS!

The atmosphere of the setting, the brooding nature of the characters and the pure REH philosophical bent of the dialogue make this page special.
