This page has an interesting history and provenance.

Let me start off by saying that this page is the original art for page two of the White Indian story that appeared in Durango Kid 3 called The War of the River! The cover date of that comic was Feb-Mar 1950. Three years later, the story was reprinted in White Indian #11. Anyone with access to both issues will notice that page 2 is slightly different in the reprint than in the original Durango Kid... differences in the inking lead GCD to question whether Frazetta did the page in the reprint.

Apparently, this page was given to a fellow artist by Frazetta around 1952. When it came time to reprint White Indian, they found Frazetta's friend had moved away and Frank (or someone) apparently had to re-do the page for White Indian 11. That redone page basically copies the top five panels (although the inking is different) but there are marked variations in the last two panels.

There also seems to be some debate as to whether the redone page is by Frazetta or Angelo Torres who was known to be able to mimic Frazetta pretty well back in 1952 and did do a White Indian story for their reprint books. While I believe both of the pages from this story are by Frazetta, we'll never know the details, now. What I do know is that this is the "first" page Frazetta did for the story; it is all Frazetta and is classic.

When the person Frazetta gave this to passed away, his family put it up for sale. I got very lucky when the original buyer returned the page to the seller because there were two page 2's and he was worried about provenance. His loss, unfortunately, was my gain.

Wally, this is a fantastic page. Congratulations! I followed this page and the others that GD put up. What a phenomenal bunch of Frazetta history. So beautiful!

Great page Wally. I see nothing but Frazetta here. I'd love to see the redo though, you should put a scan of it up!
