Dave drew this during an Easter Weekend appearance at a Holiday Inn in Edmonton Alberta, March 30, 1986. This piece along with a young Cerebus that he did on the same size sheet of paper - and you're right, it is a huge drawing - were feverishly bid on. I missed out on both but I did get to watch him draw so that's something. The show itself was supposed to be a big event according to the organizers but it ended up tanking and only a handful of vendors, fans and Dave showed up (I had dragged my girlfriend/now wife to the event), Dave did an amazing job keeping the fans in attendance entertained. The winner of this piece owned the infamous Comic Legends comic shop in Calgary (hence the "Calgary Mental Health" notation at the bottom). The owner of the shop had it displayed right next to the cash register of the store for a number of years and then the store got into legal troubles after selling what the police deemed an offensive comic book to a minor. That sale, and the owners legal troubles from it, is what started the Comic Legends Legal Defence Fund (clldf.ca) in 1987, the Canadian equivalent of
the CBLDF in the USA. Comic Legends eventually went out of business which is a shame because it was one of the best stores in Calgary (I frequented it quite a bit during my Art College days).
