DescriptionHoward Chaykin's American Flagg! is my favourite comic series of all time. I have sought endlessly to find a cover from this series as my ultimate Chaykin grail. Today, I own two!American Flagg! was the first truly successful independent, creator-owned series. It's set in a dystopian, corporate, and violent future. Not only was it unapologetic for its cynical nature, it celebrated it! It was unlike anything I had ever read at the time and left an indelible mark on me because of its great storytelling. This cover celebrates Rueben's victory over the corporate-industrial-military complex. Dressed as the Statue of Liberty, Mandy's indifference to Rueben's victory, ostensibly a victory for democracy, is sweetly ironic. My thanks to Felix for parting with this piece and my thanks to John for brokering the deal! As Felix told me, this piece is the perfect bookend to the first issue of American Flagg! Social/Sharing |
