DescriptionHere is another great pin-up by Jim Silke. With this one, we chose one of the more popular actresses of the late 1960's, Raquel Welch. Fantastic Voyage was a 1966 science movie based on a story by Otto Klement and Jerome Bixby. The original concept was set in the 19th century and was meant to be a Jules Verne–inspired adventure. Instead the writer made it more a Cold War story. After years of being cast in small roles, having small roles in TV shows like Bewitched, McHale's Navy and The Virginian and actually auditioning to play Mary Ann Summers on Gilligan's Island (could you imagine her as Mary Ann??) Raquel landed her first featured role in a beach film called A Swingin' Summer (1965). That same year, she agreed to seven-year nonexclusive contract for five movies over the next five years and was cast in a leading role in Fantastic Voyage (1966), playing a member of a medical team that is miniaturized and injected into the body of an injured diplomat with the mission to save his life. It was that film that catapulted Raquel Welch to the attention of movie-goers. 20th Century-Fox then "loaned" her to a British studio where she made One Million Years B.C. Although she had only three lines in the whole movie, the image of her in a doe-skin bikini became an international best-selling poster and turned her into a sex symbol. Over the next decade she made a number of movies Bedazzled (1967), Bandolero! (1968), 100 Rifles (1969), and Myra Breckinridge (1970) and some claim that she was the last star to be created under the studio system. This commission captures Raquel in her classic white wetsuit with the submarine from the fil in the background. Another winner from Silke!! Go to San Diego and buy lots of his art! Social/Sharing |
