DescriptionI cut my teeth on Daredevil during the classic Nocenti/John Romita, Jr. run during the 1980's. During the run, there was a particularly poignant issue (#266 to be exact) in which a roughed-up DD seeks solace during the holidays in a bar. While there, Mephisto, disguised as a flirtatious brunette (DD's weakness, of course) tries to tempt him, eventually revealing his true identity when DD fails to take the bait. The title of that issue was "A Beer With the Devil," which, for some reason, has stuck with me over the years. Recently, I realized that not only did that title have some historic resonance, but it also could serve as the basis for a really fun DD-centric theme for commissions, in which DD shares some suds with one or more characters of the artist's choosing.Well, I knew that I had to kick this idea off with style, and who better to tackle the inaugural entry into this esteemed series than Joltin' John Lucas, whose sardonic wit and artistic acumen know no bounds on this mortal plane? Thus, I am proud to present to all whom dare gaze upon it, John's madcap, out-of-the-box, truly genius vision for A Beer With the Devil, featuring Daredevil (Marvel) sharing a brew with The Claw, arch-nemesis of the Golden Age Daredevil (Lev Gleason). John went bananas including a host of other obscure Lev Gleason Golden Age characters to populate the bar in the background, which I will attempt to rundown here (from left to right): Iron Jaw, Crimebuster (in the doorway), Captain Battle sharing a drink with He-She, and lastly, The Silver Streak. John contends (and I tend to agree) that DD's heightened senses would make him a drinking lightweight. From John: In his intoxicated state, DD's radar sense would be erratic, devolving into a swirling fog (seen throughout the bar). With his faculties on the fritz, DD gestures toward The Claw in the same spiral pattern as if to say, "You look vaguely familiar." John knows that I'm a Red Sox fan, so he couldn't help but have the whole sordid scene take place in a Yankee bar, replete with Evil Empire paraphernalia. Argh! Well, needless to say, this seed of an idea blossomed into something bizarrely amazing in John's hands, as I fully anticipated that it would. Thanks, Uncle Johnny! Unlike your beloved Yankee's, you never fail to deliver on high expectations. Social/Sharing |

Cool idea. I liked that run on DD as well. I have 3 pages from that bar scene in my CAF.

Cheers! Love anything that features Daredevil vs. the Claw. Also, John delivered a great commission for me as well (similar to yours, he went crazy adding a bunch of characters to my idea as well) and I cannot say enough good things about the man.

I saw John post a preview of this recently, but did not know the story behind it until now, and that greatly enhances it. John always goes all out with these commissions and this one is just spectacular!
